As the name implies, Rat mites are mites that live on rats and other rodents. As the rats spread, so do these mites. The mites can then make the jump to human hosts by crawling from voids or other areas where rats might be hiding. These mites can be found pretty much everywhere rats and other rodents are found, so they are particularly common in apartments and cities in New York and New Jersey.
Rat mites can live for some time without a host, so even if you’ve successfully treated your home for mice and rats, you may still have live mites looking for a host. The
Rat mite bites mimic bedbug bites. The bites look similar, but feel different. Mites do not produce and anesthetic like bedbugs, so you can generally feel a mite biting you.
