Mites are extremely small parasites that live on birds. There are 4 stages in the mite life cycle—egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Bird mites are more common than rat mites in our area. These mites bite and can cause discomfort for home owners. Home owners will usually see these mites around windows where birds have built nests. The mites enter the home and begin biting on human hosts. Mites spend their life on the bird host but will leave the nest when the bird host has died to find another host to feed upon.
